About your Pond De-Icer:
The Floating Pond De-Icer is designed to keep open a vent hole in the ice to release harmful gases from underneath. Even the smallest of holes will suffice. If you allow your pond to completely freeze over during the winter months, the harmful gases produced by fish waste and plant decay cannot escape the ice. These trapped gases eventually build up to levels which are deadly for your costly fish and plants.
The Floating Pond De-Icer is intended for use in ponds of 600 gallons or less. A pond larger than 600 gallons will require the use of two de-icers tied together to act as one.
Place your de-icer at the edge of your pond, touching the liner, in the shallowest area. This placement will allow the unit to operate more efficiently by reflecting heat off the side of the pond or liner.
Your de-icer must be protected from the wind. The wind steals heat faster than the unit can release it. If not protected from the wind, your de-icer will not function to its fullest capabilities. To set up a wind barrier, place a sheet of plywood so it covers the corner of the pond with the de-icer positioned underneath it. Be careful not to completely cover the pond, or toxic gases will not be able to escape.
Keep your de-icer heating element free of mineral buildup, such as lime. Lime buildup is the leading cause of de-icer failure and will void the warranty if the unit is not properly cleaned and maintained. To remove lime buildup, clean your de-icer with white vinegar or a commercial lime-removing cleanser and a brush. Keep your de-icer clean for maximum efficiency and longevity.
Monitor your power supply. Low power, extension cords, or defective housing wires will greatly reduce the effectiveness of your de-icer. DO NOT use extension cords with your pond de-icer.
If the unit freezes into your pond due to power loss, allow the unit adequate time to melt itself free. Do not chip or cut at the unit, especially if it is plugged in.
DO NOT ASSUME YOUR DE-ICER IS DEFECTIVE IF IT SHOULD NOT PERFORM TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS. To determine if your de-icer is truly defective, you must perform an "air test." Place the de-icer in the freezer or outside (if the temperature is below 35 degrees F) for one hour (the unit should not be in water). After an hour, plug the unit into a known good outlet. Hold the unit by the supply cord. Within seconds, the element should begin to heat. Listen for the thermostat to "click off." Unplug the unit and let it cool. If the de-icer performs as specified above, it is working fine and to its fullest capacity.
Cleaning instructions: Clean with white vinegar or Lime-Away and use a brush. Unit must be kept clean to prevent mineral build-up which would effect performance.

The pond de-icer works great. It kept a good size hole in my big pond and kept my little pond almost completely thawed.
Wow! This little de-icer packs a big punch! My old de-icer quit working during a sub-zero cold snap and my pond froze over solid. I needed a new de-icer fast. I ordered and it got here the next day! I plugged it in, set it on top of the ice and it immediatly started to melt the ice! Within a couple of hours, there was a large, thawed hole in the ice! Thanks bunches. This little de-icer saved my pond.
Having an area free of ice is crucial for koi ponds or ponds with fish to allow proper gas exchange. Without an opening in the ice the supply of dissolved oxygen is depleted. Use our de-icer comparison chart to chose the right de-icer for your pond.
Getting your pond ready for winter really begins in the fall. Water temperature, rather than air temperature, is the important indicator of when it's best to make changes to your pond. Use our Winter Survival Guide to get prepared for the season.
As winter approaches, you will want to make sure your pond system is clean and operating at 100% efficiency. You will also want to make sure that the water quality is as good as it can be. Use this article to learn how.
